Our pair of lungs is one of the major organs of our body which needs exceptional care. More than the fact that it keeps us alive by allowing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body, it helps in maintaining the acid-base balance of the body by acting as one of our buffer systems. Our lungs are important. Care for them is a necessity. And naturally clean lungs do have perks and among them is extending your lifespan.



We are exposed to toxins and substances which can evidently harm our lungs. As a matter of fact, respiratory diseases and disorders are among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity rates all over the world most specifically to individuals belonging at the extremes of age - too young and too old. Statistics have shown that 35 million Americans are suffering respiratory problems of any sort. And sad to say that not all of us are aware of these diseases and how they transpire.



The Reason Behind



Technically, our lungs give us the opportunity to breathe and be able to intake oxygen which is of need. Alterations in the functioning of our lungs can debilitate our body. So caring for it is extremely mandatory.



What you can DO



First is to stop smoking or avoid smoking. If you are among the smoking population, better seek help on how to do away or at least lessen your cigarette intake. If you, on the other hand, belong to the non-smoking group, avoid congested places with smokers. Always cover your nose when around smoking people or better yet avoid them.



Second, take the precautions. Cover your nose when pollution is heavy and in congested areas. Wear appropriate gears if you are working at areas where smoking hazards are present. Be aware than respiratory diseases are more or less transmitted via droplet or air, so a handkerchief will always be your handy companion. Practice proper hand hygiene before and after handling public things.



Third, eat right. A healthy diet is among the best ways to prevent many respiratory diseases especially lung cancer. Eating right makes sure that all the parts of your body are kept at its nourished state. Eat fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants present in the food you eat helps in eliminating free radicals which damages cells and tissues of the body.



Fourth, be active. Getting into sports and activities increases your cardiovascular and pulmonary responses, thus, enhancing your breathing in and breathing out of oxygen. Practicing breathing exercises encourages better lung expansion and helps in removing impurities from your lungs. As an added perk, these exercises help you relax - a lot. Naturally clean lungs - all we need for a better, happier and more productive life.
